Banded Demoiselle Nymph
Calopteryx splendens (nymph)
The nymph lives underwater among stems, roots, and slow-flowing river vegetation. It is a small ambush predator, feeding on mosquito larvae, tiny crustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates. Rather than chasing far, it waits in cover and snaps prey with a hinged lower lip. Like other damselfly nymphs, it breathes with leaf-like gills at the end of the abdomen.
