Western Fence Lizard Hatchling
Sceloporus occidentalis (hatchling)

Tiny hatchlings keep to low cover in dry grass, leaf litter, rocks, and fence-line edges where they can bask and hide quickly. They feed on very small insects and other minute arthropods, relying on sudden dashes and quick bites rather than strength. Their muted brown-gray pattern helps them disappear against soil and bark. Like many young lizards, survival depends heavily on staying still until danger passes, then sprinting for a crevice.
