Western Toad Toadlet
Anaxyrus boreas (toadlet)

Western toad toadlets leave the water for damp shorelines, wet meadows, and nearby cover where they can avoid drying out. They feed on tiny insects, springtails, mites, and other small invertebrates captured with quick tongue strikes. Young toadlets rely on stillness, low hopping, and their developing skin toxins to discourage predators. After metamorphosis they often disperse together from breeding sites, but each small toadlet must quickly find moist shelter and food.
