Common Snapping Turtle Juvenile
Chelydra serpentina (juvenile)

Juveniles spend much of their time in shallow, muddy water with plenty of plants, submerged logs, and soft bottoms for concealment. They hunt insects, tadpoles, small fish, worms, and carrion, often waiting motionless before lunging. Their growing shell and long tail help them survive, though they still avoid many larger predators. Young snapping turtles become increasingly bold and can deliver a quick bite when handled or cornered.
