Common Mormon Chrysalis
Papilio polytes (chrysalis)

The Common Mormon chrysalis is usually fixed upright to a twig, stem, wall, or leaf support with a silk pad and girdle. It does not feed and relies on camouflage, matching green or brown surroundings while the body reorganizes inside. The hard pupal case gives some protection, but the stage is largely immobile and vulnerable to parasitoids and weather. Its color can vary with the background, helping it disappear against fresh stems or dry bark.
