Juvenile Painted Turtle
Chrysemys picta (juvenile)

A juvenile painted turtle spends more time actively swimming through ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow streams with muddy bottoms and aquatic plants. It eats insect larvae, small snails, tadpoles, algae, and soft vegetation as its diet gradually broadens. It basks often on logs or floating debris to warm its body and support growth. The bright red and yellow markings are useful field marks even before full adult size is reached.
