Grass Snake Hatchling
Natrix natrix (hatchling)
Newly hatched grass snakes are slender, secretive reptiles that shelter in damp vegetation, compost heaps, and the edges of ponds or ditches. They feed on very small amphibians, tadpoles, fish fry, and invertebrates when available. At this size they rely heavily on freezing, hiding, and sudden wriggling escapes rather than fighting. A hatchling already shows the species’ pale neck collar, which helps distinguish it from many other small snakes.
