Common Black Ground Beetle Larva
Pterostichus melanarius (larva)

This slender larva lives in soil, leaf litter, garden beds, and damp field edges where it can stay hidden during the day. It is an active predator, using its sickle-like jaws to seize small insects, soft-bodied larvae, and other tiny invertebrates. The larva often hunts from cover and retreats into loose earth when disturbed. Like many ground beetle larvae, it looks very different from the adult, with a longer, flatter body built for crawling through narrow spaces.
