European Ground Squirrel Pup
Spermophilus citellus (pup)

Young European ground squirrels remain close to the natal burrow in open grassland and steppe habitats, using the tunnel entrance as quick shelter. They feed on tender shoots, seeds, and small invertebrates as they learn to forage above ground. Pups are cautious and rely on freezing, hiding, and short dashes rather than prolonged fights. A notable early survival skill is recognizing alarm calls from nearby adults and diving underground immediately.
