Blue Bottle Fly Pupa

Calliphora vomitoria (pupa)

Blue Bottle Fly Pupa

The pupa rests inside a hardened brown puparium, usually hidden in soil, litter, cracks, or sheltered places near the larval feeding site. It does not feed, instead transforming its larval body into the adult fly within the protective case. Its main defense is stillness and the tough outer shell rather than escape. Development speed depends strongly on temperature, with warmth bringing the adult stage sooner.
