Smooth Newt Larva
Lissotriton vulgaris (larva)

Smooth newt larvae live in still or slow-moving ponds, hiding among submerged plants where their feathery external gills can draw oxygen from the water. They feed on tiny aquatic invertebrates such as water fleas, mosquito larvae, and other small prey they can snap up. They rely on quick darts and camouflage rather than strength, and larger larvae may sometimes prey on smaller amphibian larvae. A notable feature is that the larva gradually loses its external gills as it prepares to leave the water.
