Canvasback
Aythya valisineria

Adult Canvasbacks are large diving ducks of open lakes, deep marshes, bays, and coastal waters, especially during migration and winter. They dive for submerged plants such as wild celery, along with seeds, tubers, mollusks, and aquatic invertebrates. Strong legs set far back on the body make them excellent underwater swimmers, though they need a running start across the water to take off. Males are recognized by a chestnut head, black chest, pale body, and the species’ distinctive long, sloping profile.
