Wood Thrush Fledgling
Hylocichla mustelina (fledgling)

A Wood Thrush fledgling lives in dense understory near the nest, hopping through leaf litter and low branches while its flight feathers finish growing. It still receives food from its parents but begins practicing the ground-foraging motions used to find beetles, caterpillars, ants, and berries. Its spotted juvenile plumage helps break up its outline among leaves and shadows. A notable fact is that fledglings may leave the nest before they can fly well, using short fluttering bursts to escape danger.
