Caribou Calf
Rangifer tarandus (calf)

A caribou calf is born on open tundra or boreal calving grounds, where wide visibility helps expose approaching predators. It feeds on its mother’s milk at first and begins nibbling tender grasses, sedges, and new leaves as it grows. Within hours of birth it can stand and run, an essential defense for a vulnerable young ungulate. Its spotted or muted coat helps it blend into the ground cover during its earliest days.
