Twelve-spotted Skimmer
Libellula pulchella

This medium-sized dragonfly patrols ponds, marshes, and slow streams across much of North America, often perching in sunny open spots between flights. Adults hunt small flying insects by launching from a perch and seizing prey in midair with their legs before biting with strong jaws. Males are territorial around breeding waters, where their black wing spots and pale patches make them easy to recognize in flight. Like other dragonflies, its aquatic young live underwater before emerging and transforming into the winged adult.
