Dekay's Brownsnake
Storeria dekayi
Dekay's Brownsnake is a small, secretive snake found in moist woodlands, gardens, parks, and leaf-littered edges across much of eastern North America. It spends much of its time hidden under logs, stones, mulch, or debris, emerging to hunt soft-bodied prey such as slugs, earthworms, and snails. When threatened, it may flatten slightly, strike defensively, or release a musky odor rather than rely on speed or strength. A notable trait is its specialized diet, which helps control garden pests despite the snake’s harmless nature.
