Marbled White Butterfly
Melanargia galathea

The adult is found in sunny grasslands, meadows, roadside verges, and chalk or limestone slopes rich in flowers. It feeds on nectar from plants such as knapweed, thistles, and scabious, while males patrol for mates in warm weather. Its black-and-white chequered wings are unusually bold for a European grassland butterfly. Adults are active mainly in summer and depend on flower-rich, lightly managed grassland.
