Red Mason Bee
Osmia bicornis

A solitary bee of gardens, orchards, woodland edges, and old walls, often nesting in hollow stems, beetle holes, or artificial bee hotels. Adults feed on nectar while collecting pollen for their larvae, sealing each brood cell with mud partitions. Females can sting but are usually non-aggressive, relying more on flight and retreat than confrontation. This species is an important early-season pollinator and is active in cool spring weather when many other insects are still scarce.
