Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel
Ictidomys tridecemlineatus

This small prairie squirrel lives in open grasslands, roadsides, parks, and cultivated fields across central North America, using burrows for shelter, nesting, and hibernation. It feeds mainly on seeds, grasses, and insects, occasionally taking small animal prey when available. Quick and alert, it often stands upright to watch for danger before darting underground. Its name comes from the alternating pale stripes and rows of spots that run lengthwise down its back.
