Abert's Towhee
Melozone aberti

Abert's Towhee is a large, long-tailed sparrow of desert riparian thickets, mesquite, cottonwood edges, and dense brush in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It spends much of its time on or near the ground, hopping under cover and scratching through leaf litter for insects, seeds, and small fruits. Though capable of short flights, it often relies on concealment and quick movement through vegetation rather than open aerial escape. A notable trait is its strong pair-bond behavior, with mates commonly staying together and giving sharp contact calls from dense cover.
