Round-tailed Ground Squirrel
Xerospermophilus tereticaudus

A small desert ground squirrel of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, usually found in sandy flats, washes, and open creosote scrub. It spends much of the hot day near or inside burrows, feeding on seeds, green shoots, flowers, and occasional insects. Its pale sandy coat and round, thin tail help it blend into open desert ground. In harsh heat or drought it may enter periods of torpor to conserve energy.
