Lilac-breasted Roller
Coracias caudatus

Lilac-breasted Rollers inhabit open savannas, woodland edges, and lightly wooded grasslands across eastern and southern Africa. They perch conspicuously on trees, poles, or termite mounds, scanning for insects, scorpions, small lizards, and other ground prey before dropping down to seize them. In breeding season, they perform dramatic rolling display flights with steep dives and twisting movements. Their brilliant lilac breast, turquoise belly, and long tail streamers make them one of Africa’s most recognizable birds.
