European Hamster

Cricetus cricetus

European Hamster

Adult European hamsters live in complex burrows across loess soils, field margins, meadows, and cultivated land in parts of Europe and western Asia. They are mostly solitary and crepuscular to nocturnal, foraging for seeds, grains, legumes, roots, insects, and other small foods. Large cheek pouches allow food to be carried back to underground chambers for storage. A notable fact is that this species hibernates in winter and may wake periodically to eat from its cached supplies.
