Smooth-billed Ani
Crotophaga ani
The Smooth-billed Ani is a glossy black cuckoo of open tropical and subtropical habitats, including savannas, scrub, pastures, and forest edges. It moves through low vegetation and along the ground searching for insects, small lizards, and other invertebrates, while also eating fruit and seeds. Its deep, laterally flattened bill gives the head a distinctive heavy profile. The species is especially known for its social nesting habits, with several females often laying in a shared nest.
