Clouded Sulphur Butterfly
Colias philodice
The adult is a yellow sulphur butterfly of open country, common in meadows, pastures, roadsides, and alfalfa fields. It drinks nectar from flowers and males patrol low over vegetation while searching for mates. It avoids danger mainly by taking flight quickly and flying in a wavering path rather than by direct combat. The dark wing borders and small pale-centered spots help distinguish it from many other yellow butterflies.
