Greenlegged Grasshopper
Melanoplus viridipes
The adult Greenlegged Grasshopper is a small short-horned grasshopper found in grassy openings, prairies, roadsides, and other sunny herbaceous habitats. It feeds mainly on grasses and low plants, using strong hind legs to leap away from danger and wings for brief escape flights. Males may use movement and sound-producing displays during courtship, while both sexes depend heavily on camouflage and sudden jumps to avoid predators. Its bright green hind legs are a useful field mark among otherwise brownish Melanoplus grasshoppers.
