White-faced Heron
Egretta novaehollandiae

A slim, grey wading bird found around wetlands, tidal flats, farm dams, estuaries, and even damp pasture across Australia, New Zealand, and nearby islands. It stalks slowly through shallow water or grass, spearing fish, frogs, insects, crustaceans, and small reptiles with its sharp bill. When disturbed it takes off with steady wingbeats and may give harsh croaking calls. Unlike many herons, it often forages alone in open country well away from large wetlands.
