Florida Scrub-Jay
Aphelocoma coerulescens
The adult Florida scrub-jay lives in open, fire-maintained oak scrub on sandy ridges in Florida. It forages on insects, acorns, berries, small reptiles, and other small animals, often caching acorns in the ground for later use. Adults move boldly through low vegetation, fly between exposed perches, and give loud alarm calls when danger appears. This species is found only in Florida and is well known for cooperative breeding, with older offspring often helping raise younger chicks.
