Garden Tiger Moth Caterpillar
Arctia caja (larva)
This hairy larva lives on low plants in gardens, meadows, hedgerows, and woodland edges. It feeds on a wide range of leaves, including nettles, docks, dandelions, and other herbaceous plants. When threatened, it curls up or exposes dense bristles that make it unpleasant to handle. Its “woolly bear” appearance is a warning: the hairs and body chemicals help deter predators.
