Common Hoverfly
Syrphus ribesii

Common hoverflies are small aerial insects often seen in gardens, hedgerows, woodland edges, and flower-rich meadows. Adults feed on nectar and pollen, hovering with exceptional control before settling on blossoms. Their yellow-and-black pattern mimics stinging wasps, but they are harmless flies with no sting. A notable feature is their ability to remain almost motionless in mid-air, then dart away instantly when disturbed.
