Common Glow-worm
Lampyris noctiluca

The adult is found in rough grassland, meadows, scrub, hedgebanks, and open woodland margins, especially in places with little artificial light. Adult females are wingless and glow strongly from the ground to attract males, while males are smaller, winged, and fly in search of glowing females. Adults feed little or not at all, living mainly to reproduce after the predatory larval stage. Their green bioluminescence is one of Europe’s best-known beetle courtship signals and also helps advertise their unpalatable chemistry.
