Stone Crayfish
Austropotamobius torrentium

Stone crayfish live in cool, clean, fast-flowing streams and hide beneath stones, roots, and undercut banks during the day. They are mostly nocturnal, feeding on aquatic insect larvae, carrion, plant matter, and other small stream organisms. When threatened, they raise their claws, clamp with their pincers, or shoot backward with a rapid tail flip. This species is an indicator of high-quality freshwater habitat and is vulnerable to pollution and crayfish plague.
