Ebony Jewelwing
Calopteryx maculata

Ebony jewelwings are delicate damselflies found along shaded, slow-moving streams and wooded river edges in eastern North America. Adults perch on leaves and twigs near water, darting out to catch tiny flying insects with quick aerial movements. Males are especially noticeable for their velvety black wings and metallic green-blue bodies, which they display during territorial and courtship flights. Like all damselflies, their immature stage is aquatic, but the adult is a graceful streamside flier.
