Bald-faced Hornet
Dolichovespula maculata

A black-and-white social wasp found across much of North America, often building large gray paper nests in trees, shrubs, or on buildings. Adults hunt flies, caterpillars, and other small arthropods to feed larvae, while also taking nectar and sugary liquids for themselves. When a nest is threatened, an individual can deliver repeated venomous stings and may even flick venom toward an intruder’s eyes. Despite its name, it is a type of yellowjacket rather than a true hornet.
