Red-crested Cardinal
Paroaria coronata

A small songbird of open woodland, shrubland, parks, and grassy edges, often near wetlands and rivers in southern South America. It feeds mainly on seeds, grains, fruit, and small insects picked from the ground or low vegetation. Adults are active and alert, using short flights, hopping movements, pecks, and raised-crest displays in territorial encounters. Its vivid red head and crest make it one of the most recognizable cardinals, though it is not a true cardinal in the North American sense.
