Violet Dropwing
Trithemis annulata

The adult Violet Dropwing is a dragonfly of warm ponds, wetlands, canals, and slow waters, commonly seen perching in sunny open spots near the shore. It hunts on the wing, catching midges, mosquitoes, and other small flying insects with its legs before eating them. Mature males develop a striking violet-purple bloom over much of the body, while females and younger males are more yellow-brown. Adults are territorial around breeding sites, and females lay eggs by dipping the abdomen onto the water surface.
