Carolina Mantis
Stagmomantis carolina

Adult Carolina mantises inhabit fields, gardens, forest margins, and weedy lots across much of the eastern and central United States. They wait motionless on vegetation, relying on camouflage before lunging at flies, moths, bees, grasshoppers, and other insects. Adults can spread their wings and forelegs in a startle display, and males are generally more capable fliers than the heavier females. Females lay a foamy egg case called an ootheca that hardens around the eggs and protects them through the season.
