Eastern Coral Snake
Micrurus fulvius

Eastern coral snakes live in sandy pine woods, hardwood hammocks, scrub, and leaf litter across the southeastern United States. They are secretive snakes that spend much of their time under debris or in loose soil, emerging most often after rain or in mild weather. Their diet is mainly other small snakes and lizards, subdued with potent neurotoxic venom delivered through short fixed fangs. A notable defense is their bright red, yellow, and black banding, which warns predators even though they are generally shy and reluctant to bite unless handled.
