Common Acrobat Ant
Crematogaster lineolata

Common acrobat ants live in eastern North American woodlands, fields, yards, and buildings, nesting in soil, rotting wood, hollow stems, or damp structural cavities. Workers forage for small insects, honeydew, and other sugary foods, often climbing vegetation and tree trunks. When disturbed, a worker raises its heart-shaped abdomen over its body like an acrobat and releases defensive chemicals. This abdomen-lifting posture is the behavior that gives acrobat ants their common name.
