Differential Grasshopper
Melanoplus differentialis

The adult is common in prairies, roadsides, gardens, and agricultural fields across much of central and eastern North America. It feeds on grasses, forbs, and many crop plants, often moving by long jumps followed by short flights. Adults are strong-legged, active in warm sunny weather, and rely on quick escape more than direct confrontation. The black chevron markings on the hind femora are a distinctive field mark.
