Striped skunk kits are born in underground dens, usually sheltered in abandoned burrows, hollow logs, or spaces beneath buildings. They nurse at first, then begin sampling insects, grubs, small animals, eggs, and soft plant foods as they grow. Young kits stay close to the den and follow their mother on short foraging trips before becoming independent. Even while small, they develop the famous tail-up warning posture and chemical spray that deters predators.
