Rock Squirrel
Otospermophilus variegatus

Rock squirrels inhabit rocky slopes, canyon edges, scrubland, and desert foothills of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They are agile ground squirrels that dash between boulders and retreat into burrows or rock crevices when threatened. Their diet is varied, including seeds, fruits, green vegetation, insects, and occasionally small animals or carrion. A notable trait is their sharp alarm calling, which warns nearby animals of snakes, raptors, and other predators.
