Spotted Turtle
Clemmys guttata

The spotted turtle is a small freshwater turtle of shallow marshes, bogs, wet meadows, and slow woodland pools in eastern North America. It spends much of its active season moving between water and soft, vegetated edges, feeding on aquatic insects, worms, snails, tadpoles, and plant material. When threatened, it commonly withdraws into its shell or slips into cover among mud and vegetation. Each individual has a unique pattern of yellow spots on the dark shell, though the number of spots can vary greatly with age and region.
