Eastern Glass Lizard
Ophisaurus ventralis

Adult eastern glass lizards inhabit open pine woods, grasslands, coastal dunes, and sandy edges where cover and loose soil are available. They hunt insects, spiders, snails, and small vertebrates, striking with quick jaws and then slipping back into vegetation. Although snake-like, they are legless lizards with movable eyelids and external ear openings. Their extremely long, brittle tail can break away to distract predators, giving the group its “glass lizard” name.
