Southern Flannel Moth Caterpillar
Megalopyge opercularis (larva)

This larval stage lives on shrubs and trees in warm southeastern North American habitats, often feeding on leaves of oaks, elms, citrus, and other broadleaf plants. It moves slowly and relies on its dense, fur-like covering rather than speed. Hidden among the hairs are venomous spines that can cause an intensely painful sting when touched. The fuzzy appearance gives it the nickname “puss caterpillar,” but this stage is the dangerous one to handle.
