Southern Toad
Anaxyrus terrestris

Adult southern toads are terrestrial amphibians found in sandy woods, yards, fields, and coastal plain habitats, especially where loose soil allows easy digging. They spend hot or dry periods partly buried and emerge at night to eat beetles, ants, crickets, and other small invertebrates. Large parotoid glands behind the eyes produce toxic secretions that discourage predators. Males gather at shallow water after rains and give a high, trilling call during the breeding season.
