White-lined Sphinx
Hyles lineata

A fast-flying hawk moth of open fields, deserts, gardens, and roadsides across much of North America. Adults hover at flowers like tiny hummingbirds, drinking nectar with a long proboscis and often flying at dusk or after dark. The caterpillars feed on a wide range of low plants, and boom years can produce conspicuous wandering larvae before pupation. This moth is notable for its strong, direct flight and pink-striped hindwings hidden beneath the forewings at rest.
