Western Conifer Seed Bug
Leptoglossus occidentalis
The adult is a brown, leaf-footed true bug that lives around pines, firs, spruces, and other conifers, feeding mainly on seeds inside cones. It can fly well and often wanders into buildings in autumn while seeking sheltered overwintering sites. Its flattened hind legs and mottled body help it blend with bark and dry vegetation. When handled, it releases a strong-smelling defensive secretion, a notable trait shared with many related true bugs.
