European Paper Wasp Larva

Polistes dominula (larva)

European Paper Wasp Larva

This soft grub lives inside a single cell of an open paper nest, usually under shelter such as eaves, branches, or cavities. It cannot hunt for itself and is fed chewed caterpillars and other insects by adult workers, while also taking sugary liquids. The larva grows by molting within its cell and can signal hunger with small movements. Before pupation, it spins a pale silk cap across the cell opening.
