Eastern Rat Snake
Pantherophis obsoletus

Adults live in forests, wooded wetlands, rocky hillsides, farms, and old buildings where rodents and nesting birds are common. They are strong nonvenomous constrictors that climb trees, rafters, and rough bark with ease. Their diet is dominated by mice, rats, squirrels, birds, and eggs, making them important natural rodent predators. Adults are often glossy black over much of the body, and they may vibrate the tail when alarmed even though they have no rattle.
